Château de Pignerolle - Musée de la communication

The Pignerolle estate, owned by the town of Angers, consists of a park of 75 hectares (about 180 acres), and a château housing the European Museum of Communication and its Orangery which is available for hire for receptions.
It is situated at St Barthélemy d'Anjou, 10 minutes from the centre of Angers.

Pignerolle Château, an 18th century jewel, is a large, neo-classical-style building, constructed in the image of the Petit Trianon.
The owner of the property was Marcel Avril, lord of Pignerolle and director of the Angers Academy of Equitation. The property was designed by the Angevin architect Bardoul de la Bigotière.
In 1943, this attractive house, once known as a "folly", became the communications centre of the German Navy, commanded by Admiral Dönitz. One of the blockhouses constructed in the surrounding woods is connected to the château by an underground tunnel. In 1958 it became a nuclear shelter for General de Gaulle.
In the 75 hectare (180 acre) park, there is a national hydrangea collection, which can be admired in the listed French-style gardens. Large alleys and flowerbeds alternate with woodland areas.
